 Textbook:

  • Suburani: A Latin Reading Course  Book 1
  • HandsUp Education Community Interest Company UK
    • Each student is issued a digital copy of the interactive textbook which is downloaded to their school issued laptop, as well as having access to a hardcopy of the text for use in the classroom.

How to Login to the Interactive Textbook:

  • Log into Suburani.com
  • Type in your User Name which is your first and last name without spaces
    • ex: jodikriebel
  • Type in your temporary password that I give you
    • ex: sofa12temp
  • From there follow the instructions to change your password 
  • SAVE this password so you will be able to access the interactive textbook

Logging Into Canvas:

On your school issued laptop:

  • Click either on "Google Chrome" or the "Edge" icon on your laptop screen.
  • Click on your account (student.gcstn.org)
  • Sign in to "Classlink" using your username
    • Example:  25jodi.kriebel   (graduation year first name.last name)
  • Click on the Canvas icon
  • Click "account"
  • Choose the "Latin 101" Course

Once in the "Latin 101" Canvas course, begin each unit by doing the following:

  • Click on the "Modules" tab from the menu on the left side of the screen.
  • Click on any module and the pages in that module will drop down.
    • Each module will begin with a narrated slide presentation of an overview of the Chapter.
    • Each module will have similar pages that will refine and/or reinforce Latin skills.
  • Follow the progression of refinement and/or reinforcement exercises and then click the "next" arrow at the bottom of the page.
  • Graded assignments and due dates are noted in the modules
  • An ungraded summary quiz for Vocabulary, Grammar and Translating in each module is available to test your mastery before taking the graded Chapter test.

Canvas Phone App:

  • Downloading the Canvas student app to your phone will allow you to receive notifications and announcements as well as checking your current grade and upcoming assignments.
 
Graded Assessments: Homework, Tests and Quizzes

Chapter Modules:

  • 1-2 Weeks in length and will generally include the following:
    • 1 Vocabulary Quiz (at the end of first week)
    • 1 Grammar Quiz (at the middle of second week)
    • 2-4 Homework grades of translation exercises
    • 1 Chapter Test

 

Review Modules: 1 Week

  • Module 5 Mid-term 
  • Module 8
  • Module 10 Final Exam This one is a 2 week review

Throughout the semester schedules change, so please stay current with those changes as they will be posted to Canvas. It is recommended that you turn on the notifications in the Canvas app on your phone to stay up to date with any changes in our schedule.

Student Learning Outcomes:

 This semester students will embark on an exciting journey into the world of Latin-a language that has shaped literature, history  and thought for centuries. Our daily synchronous sessions will provide a dynamic space for learning, where we will work together to build a strong foundation in Latin grammar and mechanics. Through lively discussions, interactive exercises, and collaborative activities, we'll translate between English and Latin, sharpening our skills and deepening our understanding of this remarkable language.

To reinforce our learning and boost your confidence, you'll also engage in asynchronous content designed to complement our daily lessons. These resources-ranging from practice activities to video explanations-are your toolkit for mastering Latin. They allow you to interact with the material at your own pace, preparing you to shine in class.

Constructive feedback will be a cornerstone of our approach. As we progress, you'll receive personalized guidance to refine your translation and reading skills, ensuring mastery and growth. Together, we will celebrate your successes, tackle challenges, and uncover the beauty of all things Latin.

      • Imperfect Tense
      • Perfect Tense
      • Conjugation, Person and Number
    • Nouns
      • 1st, 2nd and 3rd Declension
      • Gender and Number
    • Case names and functions
      • Nominative: Subjects
      • Accusative: Direct Objects
      • Ablative: Objects of the Preposition
    • Prepositions
      •  Phrases
      • Objects
    • Various sentence structures and compliments
      • Diagramming of various sentence structures as they relate to grammar mechanics.

Grading Breakdown:

              • 30%  Translated Homework 
              • 20%  Quizzes
              • 50%  Tests and Projects (2)

Classroom Expectations:

    • Respect in our learning environment is paramount!
    • Learning is messy and requires a safe space to fail and improve.
    • Disrespect in any form will NOT be tolerated.
    • Ask questions!
      • You won't know if you don't ask.
    • Open mind and attitude for learning
    • Latin is all around us every day. We just don't see it and because of that, it's difficult to see its relevance.
        • We will find it.
        • We must respect the process of incremental growth.
    • Timely submission of homework, quizzes and projects is expected.
    • The window of opportunity to submit assignments will close the day of each Chapter test, Mid-term and Final Exam.
    • School policy for illness and/or other excused absences will apply
