2026–2027 Course Expectations

Welcome to English II!

Welcome! I am excited to have you in English II this year. This class is about more than reading novels and writing essays. Together, we will read literature that challenges us, write with purpose, discuss meaningful ideas, and develop the skills needed for success in high school and beyond.

Our classroom theme is Find Your Direction. Throughout the year we will encounter stories about courage, identity, choices, perseverance, and humanity. My hope is that each text teaches you something not only about literature, but also about yourself.

The expectations in this handbook will help make our classroom organized, respectful, and successful.

Course Overview

English II is aligned with the Tennessee English II Standards and prepares students for the Tennessee End-of-Course Assessment. Throughout the year students will strengthen their reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills through literature, nonfiction, discussion, and writing.

Classroom Expectations

Our classroom will be built on four simple expectations.

Treat classmates, teachers, guests, and classroom materials with respect.

Be Responsible

Come prepared each day and complete assignments on time.

Be Engaged

Participate in discussions, activities, and collaborative learning.

Be Courageous

Challenge yourself, ask questions, and be willing to grow.

Daily Routine

Although every day will be different, most class periods will follow a similar routine.

1. Enter quietly.
2. Put your phone in assigned number holder
3. Begin the Bell Ringer immediately.
4. Follow the daily agenda.
5. Participate actively.

Grading Categories and Percentages

Daily Work- 35%

Tests/Quizes- 35% (Tests being weighted more heavily)

Writing- 30%

Classroom Materials

Please bring the following materials to class each day.

• 1½-inch or 2 inch three-ring binder (English II materials only.)
• Loose-leaf notebook paper
• A pencil or blue or black ink pen
• Highlighter
• Charged Chromebook

English II Binder

Your binder will serve as your notebook and study guide throughout the semester.

Please organize your binder using the following sections.

1. Bell Ringers
2. Grammar
3. Vocabulary
4. Reading
5. Writing
6. Assessments
7. Notes/ Ref Materials

Bring your binder to class every day.

Classroom Procedures

Attendance

Be in your seat and ready to work when class begins.

Absent Work

It is your responsibility to obtain any assignments you missed due to an absence. Check with me to obtain missed work.

Restroom

Use the restroom before class whenever possible. Emergency situations will be handled individually.

Early Finishers

When you finish an assignment early you may:

• Read an independent reading book.
• Complete missing work.
• Work on assignments for this class or study for upcoming quizzes and tests.

This is not free phone time.

Cell Phone Policy

Reminder of Consequences

Students will not be allowed to use phones during class. You cannot remove phone from the numbered phone holder when going to the bathroom or before the bell rings. This is a district and school policy and disciplinary actions are in place.

Reminder of Consequences

 All offences: phone confiscated, call admin to take up

First offence: parents contacted phone returned at the end of day

Second offence: parent contacted and parent must pick up, one day of ISS

Third offence: parents contacted and parents must pick up, phone no longer allowed, 2 day of ISS

Fourth offence: parents contacted and parents must pick up, phone no longer allowed, 3 day ISS

Repeating offences: OSS

Food and Drinks

• Water is permitted.
• Food and drinks will be allowed unless it becomes an issue.
• Clean up after yourself.

Late Work

Late assignments will receive a 10-point deduction for each day they are late unless prior arrangements have been made due to an excused absence or another approved circumstance.

Academic Integrity & Responsible Use of AI

Honesty matters.

All work submitted should represent your own thinking and effort.

The following are considered violations of academic integrity:

• Copying another student's work.
• Allowing another student to copy your work.
• Copying information from the internet without proper citation.
• Submitting work generated by Artificial Intelligence (ChatGPT or similar programs).
• Having another person complete your assignment.
• Submitting someone else's work as your own.

Any assignment involving plagiarism or academic dishonesty will receive a grade of ZERO.

Additional disciplinary consequences may also apply according to school policy.

If you are unsure whether something is acceptable, ask before submitting your work.
